Saratoga National

When my partner Tom Newkirk and I bought the property at auction that would eventually become Saratoga National Golf Club, we knew the location and site were spectacular, but we were going to have our hands full with the environmental concerns. During the process of finding a golf course architect we interviewed the biggest names in the industry, but we were missing one.

Tom and I had made the trip from New York to Massachusetts every year to play one of our favorites, Crumpin-Fox Golf Club, and never realized-until we read an article in the Boston Globe, that Roger Rulewich while with Robert Trent Jones designed the course. It didn’t take long after my first interview with Roger to hire his firm to design and shape our golf course.

Roger and his group were a pleasure to work with, and the effort they put forth in revising the plans to satisfy all the environmental concerns made this project a reality. The fact was, we had to obtain permits from the State and Federal governments in the face of unprecedented ecological challenges, overcoming substantial regulatory obstacles. Some of the solutions employed in managing water and wetland resources were innovative, and the project was so successful that the State used it as a field training site for their own wetland regulators.

In the end we hired the Group's construction division to build our entire golf course, which proved to not only give us the highest quality in design, but also in construction. We now have a golf course that I play almost every day, and I can say it never loses its appeal. This is a course that every senior and lady I know, can play, and more importantly enjoy. At the same time the course is a continual challenge for every low handicap that has had the pleasure to test it.

Roger and his team were so easy to work with, and along the way exceeded our expectations of what this golf course could be. From the day we opened the doors the course has received awards from every major publication in the industry, Golf Digest gave us #5th” BEST NEW UPSCALE COURSE OF THE YEAR” in 2001 and most recently received the Golf Course Owners Association award for ”GOLF COURSE OF THE YEAR “.
